Malerweg Stage 2: Stadt Wehlen to Hohnstein

They say the best views are still ahead, but it’s hard to imagine anything topping today. The trail led us first to the Felsenberg Neurathen castle, built around 1100—a fortress carved into the rock, with walkways that opened to views of the valley and Elbe river. We crossed the Bastei Rocks and bridge, joining the crowds of day visitors before descending 400 feet through stone and forest stairs—about 40 stories down—and climbing another 400 back up. The crowds faded, leaving only quiet paths, narrow rock walls, and metal ladders threading through slot canyons. It felt like stepping into another world.
